Amberswood, in Wigan, lies at the heart of Hindley, Ince, Spring View and Platt Bridge.
Known locally as "The Moss", it is a 160-hectare area of land, formally used for opencast mining. Since 1999, as part of the Red Rose Community Forest initiative, it has been transformed into a woodland. Over 12,000 trees have been planted, new footpaths have been laid and piles of rubbish cleared away. The land now has areas of mixed leafy woodland, wildflower meadows, grasslands, wetlands, ponds and footpaths.
Locally, Wigan Council and Groundwork Wigan and Chorley have taken the leading roles in creating the woodland. However, Amberswood is part of a £1 million project funded primarily by The Co-operative Bank and the Countryside Agency for Red Rose Forest. As well as the work of creating new woodlands, The Co-operative Bank funding has been aimed specifically at increasing community involvement in the new woodlands created.
Amberswood is a key site in the Wigan MBC Greenheart planning concept.
