Soil Creation at Brookhouse Wood

University of Liverpool / Liverpool John Moores University Green Waste Recycling and Dispersal Experiment.

The experiment aimed to establish how well different tree species grow on green waste using short rotation coppice.

Green waste is shredded organic waste, such as vegetable peelings, and can be used to produce a basic soil layer in a relatively short period. The waste is spread in thin layers, at 10-week intervals and, under the right conditions, the process can produce a topsoil around 1 metre deep in 3 years.

Four species of fast growing and short-lived trees were chosen:

The results found that the trees grew as well on the green waste as they would on many typical established agricultural soils in Greater Manchester / Cheshire and that short rotation coppice is a viable option for creation of initial woodland cover.
