Oxbow Wood

Wildlife
Biodiversity is all living things from the tiny garden ant to the giant redwood tree. You will find biodiversity everywhere, in window boxes and wild woods, roadsides and rainforests, snowfields and the seashore.

We are part of biodiversity and depend on it for quality of life. What we don’t save now, our children will pay for later. Biodiversity is the living bank that everyone should invest in. Now it is banking on you.

Wildlife to look out for at Oxbow Wood
The new and existing woodlands provide a home to lots of wildlife. A central feature running through the Woodlands is the Mersey itself – its banks are home to a significant colony of nesting Sand Martins – and the natural meandering action of the river has strongly influenced the sites character. The river corridor is a designated Site of Biological Importance. The area is a valuable Willow Carr habitat (Wet Woodland is a UK Priority Habitat and includes Willow Carr). The Willow Carr provides shelter and food for many birds and animals. The new wetland is an ideal habitat for a wide range of species, including Herons, waders and ducks. During the summer month’s look out for visiting warblers, especially the Whitethroat. There are many other types of wildlife including, Butterflies, Dragonflies and Damselflies.

The Mersey Valley Countryside Wardens actively manage the site to ensure it continues to improve and keep track of what wildlife occurs – why not get in contact with them to let them know what you’ve seen at www.merseyvalley.org.uk.
